HKGA Ladies Clinic Proves a Hit

Hong Kong (June 22): The first Hong Kong Golf Association (HKGA)-organised Ladies Golf Clinic drew an overwhelming response with more than 100 participants signing up.

Designed to introduce female beginners to the sport, with a view to further promoting golf to the wider public, the gathering was deemed a huge success.

Under guidance from 20 HKGA coaches, the Clinic comprised two parts – an introduction to the fundamentals and basic theory of golf, and on-course playing experience.

During on-course play, participants were divided into groups of six to eight and practised their short game at the Golf Academy at The Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club.

Jennifer Tang, Ladies Committee Chairperson at the HKGA, said: “The game of golf is gaining popularity among Hong Kong women. Every year, the Hong Kong Ladies Open sees the emergence of more new and talented lady golfers, while female students are embracing golf through inter-school competitions and other school activities.

“With the Ladies Golf Clinic, we aim to boost the sport’s popularity among women of different ages, helping them develop an understanding of golf culture and allowing them to enjoy the sport in a beautiful outdoor environment.”

Peter Downie, General Manager at the Clearwater Bay club, said: “We are honoured to be working with the HKGA to bring the game of golf to the ladies. Our coaches are pleased to have the opportunity to participate and become an integral part of the event.”

In keeping with safety protocols in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the HKGA required all participants and coaches to undergo body temperature checks, fill in health declaration forms and wear face masks.

The HKGA also provided each participant with their own set of clubs – including sand wedges, putters and irons – to reduce the risk of cross-infection, giving players peace of mind and a smooth start to their golfing journeys.

Danny Lai, the HKGA’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “This is a new initiative and we originally only planned to do it once. But with such encouraging results we may repeat next year. The most important is the follow through – how to get more lady beginners to continue to play the game.”
